Our client is a multi-specialist investment company in 10 African countries with business partners

in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.  As one of the largest investment managers in South Africa, the company employs a wide range of professional and specialist investment and technical staff. Staff compliment countrywide is nearly 600. They have a diverse investment offering designed to deliver on their investment promise to their clients.

They now seek a portfolio manager: sustainable finance to join their team. The private markets team reports into the company’s fixed income investment franchise and you will report to the head of fixed income private markets.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • You will be required to be in charge of the strategy and execution of sustainable finance assets and attendant portfolios;
  • You will be required to be part of the private markets joint venture (J.V.) between a subsidiary and the company’s fixed income franchise and aims to guide the origination of assets and portfolio construction and management for both division and the company’s third party investment portfolios.
  • You will be required to lead Portfolio Manager (PM) for Sustainable Finance investment strategies, assets held on balance sheet and fund propositions, including developing the strategy and delivery plans for sustainable finance asset portfolios as part of the overall fixed income private markets strategy;
  • You will be responsible for sustainable finance which includes mainly infrastructure related assets, but also development finance (such as schools, hospitals, agri-concerns and other) private credit assets that may be deemed to be sustainable finance from time to time and by agreement;
  • You will be responsible for guiding asset originators and risk managers as to portfolio requirements in order to achieve desired portfolio outcomes.  This includes instructing, steering, guiding and supporting asset originators and risk managers throughout the investment process;
  • You will be responsible for working with asset recovery specialists to the extent that any sustainable finance asset requires restructuring or principal recovery assistance;
  • You will be responsible for fulfilling a PM role on the Impact and Energy T funds (amongst other potential future funds
  • You will be responsible for developing any future fund propositions as agreed with the business from time to time;
  • You will be responsible for engaging with present investors as part of standing portfolio performance reporting;
  • You will be responsible for engaging with potential future investors to gain new or additional mandates;
  • You will be required to work with the company’s marketing and distribution teams to develop thought leadership content as part of ongoing marketing and communications strategies;
  • You will be responsible for all other attendant deliverables that may arise from time to time.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • You have a CA(SA), or CFA or similar;
  • You are FAIS accredited – this is recommended;
  • You have a minimum of 10 – 12 years’ current, relevant experience in a similar environment with broad exposure to complex structuring (including multiple financing options, multiple sectors, multiple instruments, corporate & asset-based lending);
  • You have infrastructure finance experience and expertise;
  • You have sound business acumen – understand and can unpack a project or business’s main drivers that underpin the credit investment thesis;
  • You have solid commercial acumen – capable of structuring transactions that results in mutually beneficial outcomes for the business, the clients and borrowers;
  • You have investment management knowledge – managing an existing and growing credit investment portfolio through regular stakeholder engagements;
  • You have integration and problem-solving knowledge – complex structuring problem solving (solutions) across the franchise value chain – integrating credit and market risk, operations, transaction management & support and legal to facilitate deal making;
  • You have deep infrastructure industry and capital markets knowledge including regulatory developments and key industry drivers knowledge;
  • You have deal origination and structuring knowledge;
  • You have sound legal knowledge pertaining to project finance transactions knowledge;
  • You have requirements inherent in entering into project and / or asset backed lending opportunities knowledge;
  • You have in depth understanding of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, 37 of 2002 in support of FAIS accreditation (recommended)).
