Our client who has been established in South Africa and investing on behalf of clients and has grown to become one of Africa’s largest investment management companies. This company is an investment management firm focussed on building long-term wealth for their clients. The company’s primary goal is to achieve long term wealth creation for its clients.
They now seek a multi-manager analyst to join their team. You will report to the head of multi-manager portfolios who, in turn, reports to the head of platform and adviser proposition.

JOB DESCRIPTION WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- You will be required to form part of a newly established multi-manager business unit, with the initial aim of providing independent financial advisers with investment solutions that comprehensively address their investment advice process needs.
- You will be required to play an important role in supporting the day-to-day management and growth of the multi-manager offering.. The successful candidate will combine analytical, research, governance, reporting and project management responsibilities in a small team environment.
- Investment research and portfolio construction:
- You will be required to support the head of multi-manager portfolios on manager research and portfolio oversight activities;
- You will be responsible for qualitative and quantitative analysis and screening of underlying managers and funds, including maintenance of an up to date view of funds and managers on the ‘bench’ and flow trends;
- You will be required to maintain manager research databases, scorecards, due diligence documentation and investment monitoring frameworks;
- You will be required to participate in manager meetings, research discussions and investment committee processes;
- You will be required to support the preparation of investment recommendations, research notes, reports and analysis for investment decision-making;
- You will be required to assist with portfolio reviews, asset allocation analysis and performance attribution;
- You will be required to act as a sounding board and secondary reviewer on manager research and portfolio decisions;
- You will be responsible for engagements with fund managers as required to give effect to changes to agreements, fee arrangements and regulatory changes impacting the multi-manager portfolios;
- Governance and operations:
- You will be required to own and maintain the governance framework supporting the multi-manager portfolios;
- You will be required to coordinate investment committee documentation, agendas, minutes and action tracking;
- You will be required to maintain investment policies, mandates and research records;
- You will be required to ensure manager reviews, due diligence processes and governance requirements are completed on schedule;
- You will be required to support regulatory and compliance-related requirements relevant to the multi-manager portfolios;
- You will be responsible for ongoing monitoring of underlying managers and funds, including for daily flags, allocation breaches and identification of potential liquidity concerns;
- You will be responsible for definition and implementation of an extended and automated validation and control framework;
- You will be responsible for proactive handling of any pressing operational matters with the underlying managers, including liquidity concerns, liaising with internal and external parties as required;
- Reporting:
- You will be required to take primary responsibility for all multi-manager reporting requirements, including the gathering, collation, transformation and validation of data from internal sources and third-party managers;
- You will be required to produce portfolio performance reports, investment committee packs, quarterly board reports and management information;
- You will be required to coordinate regulatory reporting and data submissions;
- You will be responsible for preparation and quality control of factsheets, presentations and marketing collateral, including supporting the drafting of quarterly commentaries, the gathering of the required information from the underlying managers, monthly performance reporting calculations and data validation and sign-off prior to publication;
- You will be required to act as the central point of coordination between investments, operations, compliance, marketing and distribution teams;
- Product development and project management:
- You will be required to perform market research and support the drafting of business cases and proposals;
- You will be required to work in collaboration with other business units, supporting the launch and implementation of new multi-manager portfolios, as well as initiatives which integrate the multi-manager offering with the financial advice process and streamline the implementation thereof on the investment platform;
- You will be required to participate in strategic projects aimed at improving investment processes, client outcomes and business scalability;
- You will be required to assist in the evaluation of new investment opportunities, product enhancements and platform initiatives;
- You will be required to drive process improvement initiatives across reporting, governance and research functions;
- Marketing, distribution and service support:
- You will be required to support distribution teams with marketing materials, relevant thought leadership and portfolio positioning;
- You will be required to support service teams with the training and content necessary to professionally manage adviser and client interactions;
- You will be required to assist with the preparation of client presentations, responses to due diligence questionnaires and adviser communications;
- You will be required to participate in selected client, consultant and adviser meetings where appropriate, including report backs to retirement fund trustee boards where applicable;
- You will be required to help ensure distribution teams remain well-equipped with relevant and up-to-date investment insights, training and marketing material, including an up to date quarterly presentation deck;
- You will be required to provide broad exposure to all aspects of a multi-manager business, including portfolio construction, manager research, governance, product development, distribution support and growth initiatives. CORE COMPETENCIES REQUIRED, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- You have strong investment analysis and quantitative skills;
- You have a good understanding of portfolio construction principles and manager research methodologies. Exposure to portfolio implementation – this is preferred;
- You have familiarity with investment data, reporting processes and systems;
- You have excellent communication (verbal and written) skills in English, with the ability to present complex information clearly and effectively to a range of audiences;
- You have sound technical skills, including usage of Excel and other applicable software systems;
- You have the ability to work in a small team environment where it is necessary to prioritise and balance different responsibilities while working toward tight deadlines.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- You have the relevant degree in finance, investments, economics, actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or a related field;
- You are progressing toward or completed CFA, CAIA or similar investment qualification – this is preferred;
- You have a minimum of 4 years current, relevant industry experience, at least three of which must be within a multi-management, discretionary fund management, asset consulting, or related investment environment;
- You have experience in a multi-management, discretionary fund management, or asset consulting environment – this is a prerequisite;
- You have demonstrated exposure to manager research, portfolio analysis or investment consulting activities.
