Our client is South Africa’s an investment manager with more than R200 billion in assets under management. They offer clients a solution-driven approach designed, implemented and managed by a team of experienced investment professionals with a diverse skill set. They have a long-standing tradition of blending both fundamental and rules-based techniques across all asset classes, with a specialist ability in fixed income strategies.
They now seek a portfolio manager: rules-based solutions to join their team. You will report to the chief investment officer.
JOB DESCRIPTION WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- You will be responsible for close collaboration with the broader investment team, risk, operations and client-facing teams to ensure consistency, accuracy, and robustness in portfolio implementation and reporting;
- Portfolio management & implementation:
- You will be required to oversee the day-to-day management of rules-based portfolios across relevant strategies;
- You will be required to ensure portfolios are implemented and maintained in accordance with approved investment rules, mandates and regulatory requirements;
- You will be required to oversee portfolio rebalancing processes, including monitoring triggers, execution timing and post-trade reviews;
- You will be required to ensure all trades are accurately captured, authorised timeously and compliant with internal systems and governance standards;
- You will be required to monitor portfolio liquidity and ensure appropriate liquidity levels are maintained;
- You will be required to review and confirm portfolio valuations and pricing where applicable;
- Investment framework & research:
- You will be required to contribute to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of rules-based investment methodologies;
- You will be required to evaluate market, economic, and asset behaviour data to assess the ongoing suitability and effectiveness of investment rules;
- You will be required to identify and recommend enhancements to rules, parameters and implementation processes;
- You will be required to ensure new instruments, issuers, and asset classes are approved, set up correctly on systems and aligned with the rules-based framework;
- You will be required to participate in investment committee discussions relevant to rules-based strategies;
- Monitoring, risk & governance:
- You will be required to monitor portfolio performance, risk metrics, and adherence to rules-based objectives;
- You will be required to identify deviations from approved frameworks and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken;
- You will be required to ensure portfolios operate within mandate, regulatory and internal risk limits
- You will be required to contribute to credit analysis and issuer assessments where applicable;
- You will be required to apply fair, transparent and treating customers fairly (TCF) principles in all portfolio-related decisions;
- You will be required to support internal and external audits, reviews and regulatory engagements;
- Leadership & team contribution:
- You will be required to be accountable for strategy outcomes and operational integrity;
- You will be required to provide guidance, oversight and technical support to portfolio managers and analysts;
- You will be required to support knowledge sharing, process discipline and best practice within the team;
- You will be required to contribute positively to team culture and broader organisational initiatives;
- Client, reporting & communication support:
- You will be required to support client-facing teams through the provision of portfolio insights, analysis and responses to ad hoc queries;
- You will be required to attend client meetings and presentations where required;
- You will be required to review and contribute to portfolio-related reports, charts and presentation materials;
- You will be required to draft or review investment, market, or methodology commentary on a periodic or ad hoc basis;
- Training, compliance & professional development:
- You will be required to ensure all regulatory, professional and internal training requirements are met on an annual basis;
- You will be required to maintain and adhere to an approved CPD plan;
- You will be required to ensure documentation of investment processes, methodologies and decisions is maintained in line with governance standards.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- You have a postgraduate qualification –
- You have a CFA designation (completed or in progress preferred);
- You have demonstrated experience in portfolio management, preferably within rules-based, quantitative, or systematic strategies;
- You have strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
- You have experience with portfolio management and trading systems (e.g. Fundamental, Charles River, IRESS, Bloomberg / Reuters or equivalent. Great team – hugely successful and a highly professional yet friendly work space. Nice people work here!
